Set Up the School Year for Success

Hearing little voices in the hallways and cafeterias, seeing new and familiar faces, and welcoming our Panthers back through the doors are some of the most exciting moments of the school year at Paragon Mills Dual Language Immersion Magnet Elementary School. The first few weeks bring new teachers, new routines, reconnecting with friends, and lots of anticipation for what the year will bring.  

Now that we have been in school for several weeks, it is the perfect time to check in and think about how we can work together to set our students and families up for a successful year.  Here are a few ways to make the most of the school year at PMES:

Get Connected and Stay Connected

Being connected to your child's school is one of the easiest ways to stay informed and involved. At Paragon Mills, we have several ways for our Panther families to know what is happening and stay connected with teachers and the school community.

Paragon Mills Calendar – Our school calendar is your go-to source for important dates, events, family activities, and school reminders. The calendar is updated frequently, so make it a habit to check it regularly. You can also subscribe to the calendar so important dates come directly to you. 

Remind – Remind is one of the best ways to stay connected with your child's teacher and with the school. Through Remind, you can receive classroom updates, school announcements, event reminders, and communicate directly with your child's teacher. You can download the Remind app for iOS or Android.  MNPS has resources for using Remind if this is your first time downloading or need a refresher! 

Social Media – Follow us on Instagram (@paragonmills) and Facebook (@paragonmillselementary) for event reminders, candid photos, celebrations, and all the fun things happening around PMES. Social media is another great way to see the learning, laughter, and Panther pride happening throughout our school.

Build the Routine

A successful school year starts with routines that help students feel prepared and confident. As we settle into the school year, take a look at your family's daily routines. Is bedtime working? Is the morning routine manageable? Does your child have a consistent place to complete homework or read?

Small habits can make a big difference. Checking the calendar, packing backpacks, and preparing for the next day can help mornings run more smoothly and give students a greater sense of independence.

Be Curious

Our students are learning new things every day—from phonics to economics. As a dual language immersion elementary school, our Panthers are also developing the incredible ability to communicate and learn in two languages.

One of the most powerful things families can do is simply be curious about what your child is learning.

Ask questions beyond, “How was school today?”

Try asking:

• What was the most interesting thing you learned today?
• What was something that challenged you?
• What made you laugh today?
• What is a new word you learned—in English or Spanish?
• Can you teach me something you learned today?
• What are you curious about now?

At PMES, we believe learning doesn't stop when students walk out of the classroom. Families are an important part of the learning team, and the conversations that happen at the dinner table, in the car, or while getting ready for bed can help students make connections between school and everyday life.
